Buying Guide

Does RFID blocking actually matter?

Modern contactless cards (Visa payWave, Mastercard PayPass) transmit at 13.56 MHz. An RFID-blocking wallet lined with metallic fabric or aluminum prevents a reader from getting close enough to capture card data. While real-world skimming attacks are relatively rare, they do happen at busy transit hubs and tourist areas. An RFID wallet is cheap insurance.

How to verify RFID blocking works

Hold your contactless card inside the wallet and tap it against a payment terminal. If the payment doesn't go through, the blocking works. We tested every wallet on this list with a dedicated RFID reader — all five blocked successfully.

Bifold vs. slim card holder

Bifold wallets hold more (cash, receipts, more cards) but are bulkier. Slim card holders hold 4–8 cards and are designed for front-pocket carry. For travel, a slim card holder with a separate cash clip or money band is the most pickpocket-resistant setup.
