Buying Guide

Hanging vs. flat toiletry bags

Hanging bags unfold and hook to a towel bar or shower rod, keeping everything accessible without needing counter space. Flat bags lay open like a book and are more compact when packed. For hotels and Airbnbs where counter space is limited, hanging bags are far more practical. For camping or hostels, a flat bag is easier to manage.

TSA liquid rules and toiletry bags

TSA requires all liquids in carry-on bags to be in containers of 3.4oz (100ml) or less, all fitting in a single 1-quart clear zip-top bag. A toiletry bag doesn't replace the quart bag — you still need to remove your liquids at security. Look for a bag with a dedicated exterior pocket for your quart bag so it's easy to grab at the checkpoint.

What size toiletry bag do you need?

For weekend trips (2–3 days): a compact flat bag or small hanging bag. For week-long trips: a medium hanging bag with 3–4 compartments. For 2+ weeks or if you carry hair tools: a large hanging bag with dedicated tool storage. When in doubt, go one size larger — a half-empty bag is easier to pack than an overstuffed one.
